Set up OneDrive

OneDrive is Microsoft's online storage. It comes with Windows. When it is set up, files in your OneDrive folders are copied to your Microsoft account online, so you can get them back even if the computer is lost.

You'll see this whenSavedSafe says OneDrive is "Not set up".

Steps

  1. Click the Start button, type OneDrive, and open it.
  2. Sign in with your Microsoft account. That is the email you use for Outlook or Hotmail, or to sign in to Windows.
  3. When it asks which folders to back up, choose Desktop, Documents, and Pictures.
  4. Wait until your files show green check marks.
  5. Run SavedSafe again to make sure the problem is fixed.

Good to know

  • Free OneDrive accounts have limited space. If OneDrive says it is full, use a backup drive with File History instead, or add more storage.
  • Deleting a file on the computer also deletes it from OneDrive, after a grace period in the OneDrive recycle bin. A USB backup with File History protects against that.
Done? Run SavedSafe again. When everything is protected, the report turns green.
